Orlando Carrillo is an athlete, coach, trainer, public speaker,
and a civil engineering graduate student at the University of Texas at Arlington.
His story is featured in the award-winning documentary, The Rebound.
For three years he has trained and coached members of the the U.S. Armed Forces as well as UTA’s wheelchair basketball camps, clinics and demos. Orlando is humble, yet charismatic, and excels at motivating all ages by sharing his knowledge, strengths and challenges with others by speaking about his experiences.
Orlando Carrillo Maffei, was born in San Cristobal, Venezuela. He grew up in a family with strong values and morals that helped him build his character. Education was always important to his family, he switched schools multiple times searching for a disciplined environment to grow in.
His first passion was horseback riding, he started in his father’s ranch when he was only 6 years old, followed by basketball and martial arts shortly after. The training and discipline involved in these sports shaped his persona.
In 1994, wanting a better future for her son, Orlando’s mother moved to the US. Education and sports became a common theme as Orlando matured. He learned a new language and played basketball throughout Jr. High and High School.
Orlando left home at the age of 17, after an argument with his mother, feeling that he was ready to move out on his own. That feeling didn’t last long, 6 months later he realized he couldn’t be completely independent.
In 2000, Orlando moved back to Venezuela with his dad. That same year Orlando lost one of his most important role models, his grandfather. He remembered this moment vividly, “I have never felt so much pain in my life, not even after all my 6 surgeries”
After rebounding from his grandfather’s death and finally finding himself, Orlando started working with his father and studying civil engineering. He had everything he wanted, his life was great, when everything happened...
